Possession
Border.png

Exercise Description:

Area: 60 x 40 with two goals with goalkeepers. 6v4 is played on the field. The field has a halfway line marked out. The coach has all the soccer balls.

1. The red team of 6 players, including GK's, plays possession soccer. Wherever the FIFTH pass is received, the reds can now attack the goal in the opposite half of the field. When the fifth pass is received, blues protect the goal reds are attacking and form a defensive screen in that half of the field.

2. If the blues win the ball, they can score on any goal at any given time.

3.. If the reds win the ball back, they start the count from one again.

4. Switch the roles of the players.

Coaching points: Defense – Work together, stay compact.

Attack – Play with a 1-2 touch mentality, and scan the field.

Intended outcome:

  • To work on speed of play in tight areas.

  • Improve the quality of the first touch, whether it's a pass or ball control.

  • Have fun

  • Compete and work together

  • Improve field awareness in small spaces

  • Gain confidence.

  • Defenders learn how to set a line of confrontation and work in a defensive block.

  • Patience in possession

Variations:

Add another defender to make it more difficult.

Possible Performance Problems:

The defenders stay in one half of the field when the ball is served by the coach. Can the attackers figure out how they can exploit this?

The defenders do not move to a defensive block once the fifth pass is made.

The attacking team is too eager to score once the fifth pass is received.
